Idle Cure was an arena rock band from southern California and was similar to bands such as Def Leppard, Foreigner, Loverboy, Night Ranger, Journey, Shout, Degarmo and Key and Whiteheart.
During the weeks and months prior to 1980, Mark Ambrose, Roger Charles, and Steve Shannon began a musical journey together. The three, along with a blend of Rock, fusion, and melodic influences merged in a song writing alliance to eventually form the band Sojourn Throughout ’81 and ’82, Sojourn played primarily Calvary Chapel engagements, as the seeds for a musical ministry grew, and thrived during the early heyday of Christian Rock and Roll. As Mark initially played keyboards in Sojourn, the search for a good fit on guitar was always a priority. Steve had known Chuck King previously from Calvary Chapel, and the two had often shared musical ideas. When a void occurred at guitar, Chuck was invited to fill out the roster. Sojourn played for the better part of another part of two years, at which time, Chuck and Roger united to form Eden, and Mark and Steve continued to work on demo material. As a point of interest, Sojourn’s last gig in Arizona featured a song by Mark, “Come Alive” which made it’s way not only onto the pre-contract demo, but the first album as well. During the time Mark and Steve were recording demos, Roger and Chuck went into the studio at Maranatha to record the Roger Charles song “Break out of the Night”, for the compilation Back to the Rock II. Difficulties recording the lead vocals lead to a call to Steve Shannon, at 10:00 pm, to record a song he’d never heard. That recording was indeed a precursor for Idle Cure. Mark, Steve, Chuck and Pete Lomakin re-united to form a new collaboration. Idle Cure (not yet named) signed it’s first recording contract with Frontline Records in the summer of 1986. The album was released by the end of the year, with “Breakaway” being a number one Rock hit, and “Take It” a surprising top five on the AOR charts. Chuck King left Idle Cure shortly after the release of the first album, and Mark, Steve and Pete continued on for the band’s eight year—five album run.
In 1986, Idle Cure launched their self-titled album on the then newly formed Frontline Records. The response was both remarkable, and immediate. “Breakaway” was a runaway hit on major Christian Rock radio stations and could have fit perfectly on Def Leppard's Pyromania album. All the members played in previous mainstream bands which explains why they were able to build that arena rock sound.
By 1990 Idle Cure was dominating rock radio with their more produced second album TOUGH LOVE (1988) but scored big with “Pray” a stadium rocker from their quasi metal album 2ND AVENUE (1990). It was the #1 song for the entire year. INSIDE OUT was recorded in 1991. ECLIPSE (1994) was the bands last album but it's also their heaviest loaded with guitar solos. It absolutely Eclipses their previous releases without abandoning their signature rockin' sound. Eclipse is amazing performance by a legendary group. If you've never this one, it's probably because it was released independently in 1994 with little to no distribution. It starts right off with "What's Your Point of View" a little bit of AC/DC guitar vibe and then smacks you in the face with that rockin' Idle Cure thunderous sound. It's tough, it's bad, it's scream, it's hot.
