Description
A Place to Stand solidified Geoff Moore’s role as one of Christian music’s premier AOR and melodic rock voices. From the energetic title track to the heartfelt “Tender Hearts” and the infectious “A Friend Like U,” the album delivers both drive and devotion. “Standing in the Gap” became a staple of Christian radio, offering a spiritual rallying cry wrapped in glossy guitars and big choruses. Bob Hartmann, Rick Florian, John Schlitt and Dave Perkins make an appearance on A Place To Stand.
Possibly the most fascinating pieces of this great AOR melodic rock album by Geoff Moore is that Dann Huff (Giant/Whiteheart) contributed to the guitar work but has gone un-credited for years, until now. Our recent conversation with Billy Smiley (producer) confirmed that there were efforts to make this more Bruce Springsteen like and give it more guitar work so he brought in session musician Dann Huff and Roscoe Meeks (twenty twenty) to help with guitars. Bob Hartmann, Rick Florian, John Schlitt and Dave Perkins also made appearances on A Place To Stand.
Geoff Moore, CCM's top AOR artist, released 5 album during the 1980's. In 2020 we remastered three of them, Where are the Other Nine? (1984), Over The Edge (1986) and The Distance (1987).
We are excited to present the next two albums from the 1980's Geoff Moore & The Distance—A Place to Stand (1988) and Foundations (1989) —now available for the first time in over 35 years on remastered CD as part of our Legends of Rock™ series. Both albums have received the full Girder treatment, which includes audio remastering by Rob Colwell and redesigned layouts by Scott Waters. 8 page booklets in a jewel case with trading cards. Limited to just 300 units each, these CDs are essential for fans of Christian AOR, melodic guitars with big choruses.
This Legends of Rock™ reissue has been fully remastered to capture every nuance of its slick production and singable melodies. With the Girder treatment, it’s not just a trip down memory lane—it’s a high-quality preservation of a moment when Christian rock met mainstream excellence.
When an album receives The Girder Treatment™, it’s more than a reissue—it’s a resurrection, restored with unparalleled attention to detail with all original liner notes and lyrics and then some. Everything collectors want and expect, carefully curated to honor the music, the message, and the memories and of course, officially licensed.
Why Are The Guitars So Good?
If you’ve ever wondered why the guitars on A Place to Stand and Foundations sound so powerful, polished, and downright addictive, there’s a good reason — they feature the legendary Dann Huff. Before becoming one of Nashville’s most sought-after producers and a four-time Grammy winner, Huff was a world-class session guitarist and frontman for the melodic rock band Giant. In the ’80s, his signature tone and soaring solos could be heard on albums by Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Petra, White Heart, and Stryper. On these Geoff Moore records, Huff’s playing injects arena-rock energy and melodic precision, giving the songs the same AOR magic you’d hear from greats like Journey or Toto.
What Billy Smiley (Producer) Had To Say:
![]()
I first got Geoff moved over from Benson, where we had done his first two albums — Geoff Moore and Geoff Moore “The Distance.” After that, I left Benson as a writer and convinced Billy Ray to sign Geoff to Sparrow Records through Peter York. That’s when we started calling him “Geoff Moore and The Distance” for these two records. We wrote most of the songs together, aiming for a Springsteen-inspired vibe but with a bit more guitar, thanks to Dann Huff and Geoff’s guitarist Roscoe Meek (from my other group, 20/20). A few songs came from David Martin and Steven Curtis Chapman. We had a great time making all these records between 1983 and 1989. After that, Geoff moved to ForeFront Records, where I didn’t work with him, as he shifted styles to fit more into the CCM bubble.
